Y our wedding shoes may not seem like such a big deal compared to everything else you have to think about when planning a wedding, but the footwear you choose can make or break your special day. They are an important piece of your bridal look and wearing the right ones can make a big difference. After all, you’ll be on your feet all day and uncomfortable or unpleasant shoes can bring your mood down faster than you can say ‘I do.’

So how do you find the wedding shoe that’s right for you?

Think about comfort

Wedding shoes are essential, yes, but sometimes they won’t even be visible at all, depending on the length of your dress. If that’s the case, find shoes that are comfortable enough to wear for long periods. That doesn’t mean you need to forget about style altogether. You still need to find shoes that you love — it’s still your wedding after all. (Check out our tips on how to make sure your wedding shoes are comfortable enough for your big day)

Consider bold colors

Your wedding shoes are a great way to add a pop of color to your all-white look. Many brides use their wedding shoes to fulfill the “something blue” tradition, but you don’t necessarily have to follow suit. You can go with any color you want. Maybe match them with your wedding color theme, your flowers or your bridesmaids’ dresses. You can also opt to just have white shoes with colored soles to make it fun but subtle.

Buy a good quality shoe

Your wedding may just be the perfect time to invest in that pair of shoes you’ve always wanted. If they’re in a style you love, are comfortable enough and you can see yourself wearing them long after the wedding, then they’re most likely a good investment. Good quality shoes can go a long way. They may be a bit pricier but they are well-made with high quality materials and last longer.

Try the shoes on with your dress

It’s usually recommended that you buy your shoes after you find your dress or you buy them around the same time because you’ll need to see both of them on you to make sure they actually go together. Check that the shades complement each other and make sure that your shoes complement the length of your dress. Bring them to your dress fittings so that adjustments can be made if necessary.

Try them on even after you buy them

Wear your shoes for at least an hour at home so you can gauge whether they’re comfortable enough. That way, if they’re not as comfortable as you would like, you can make the necessary adjustments or even return or exchange them if that’s possible.

Choose a style you love

Your wedding shoes are a statement piece, so don’t be afraid to express yourself and wear shoes that feel like “you.” Pick your usual style or one that you would love to wear, whether that means strappy sandals, flats, kitten heels, stilettos, platforms or booties. You should love your wedding shoes and feel good about wearing them.
